From 12 to 15 March 2025<\/strong>, ITQ GmbH<\/a><\/strong> invited 986 technology enthusiasts<\/strong> from all over the world<\/strong> to the SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON<\/a><\/strong> on Gran Canaria in cooperation with Dr. Stetter ITQ S.L.U.<\/a><\/strong> from the Canary Islands. The MAKEATHON is ITQ GmbH’s international Innovation Festival<\/strong> with the aim of getting young people excited about technology and promoting innovative ideas<\/strong> on the topics of Digitalisation and Sustainability<\/strong> (Smart & Green). While 546 young Talents and Representatives of renowned Sponsors<\/strong> worked on solutions for Sustainable Logistics, Recycling Processes, Smart Mobility and Smart Farming<\/strong>, among other things, 440 children and young people from Spanish educational Institutions<\/strong> were able to demonstrate their skills in Technology Workshops.<\/strong> The SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON strengthens the technical skills of all generations for a Sustainable Future<\/strong> and brings Young Talents together with companies. In this way, it helps to combat the existing shortage of Skilled Labour<\/strong> and facilitate new Training Concepts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON brought together 546 participants from 36 nations<\/strong> in the Infecar de Feria Exhibition Hall<\/a><\/strong> \u2013\u00a0including 204 Representatives from Industry, Research and Education<\/strong> as well as 342 Young Talents from 73 international educational Institutions<\/strong>. For four days, interdisciplinary Teams<\/strong> worked on Industry Challenges<\/strong> in the fields of Smart Automation, Green Logistics, AI and Circular Economy.<\/strong> They developed sustainable solutions such as Plastic-Free Packaging<\/strong> made from banana fibres, PET Recycling for Industry<\/strong>, modular water measurement systems and autonomous driving concepts for waste disposal logistics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

    In the MVTec Challenge<\/strong> \u201cAutomated Waste Detection\u201c<\/strong>, the Teams developed a solution for automated waste detection and removal. Among other things, a robotic vehicle was equipped with a USB camera for object recognition and infrared sensors for obstacle detection. In addition, a scoop for picking up waste was designed using a CAD model and realised in several prototype stages up to the final design.<\/p>\n

    The Murrelektronik<\/strong> Team developed an automated process for recycling PET bottles<\/strong>. The plastic was shredded. The resulting granulate was used to overmould electronic components<\/strong>. Robotics and mechatronics automated the process to enable an efficient Circular Economy.<\/strong> A digital product passport helped to trace the recycled materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The igus Challenge<\/strong> was all about an automated \u201cSmart Green House\u201c.<\/strong> The Team developed a system that uses a ReBeL Cobot<\/strong> and image processing programmes<\/strong> to recognise the ripeness of fruit<\/strong>. Controlled by software, the concept showed potential for sustainable vertical farming with a low carbon footprint. A 3D\/AR demo brought the solution to life.<\/p>\n

    In order to encourage enthusiasm for Technology<\/strong> as early as possible, the MAKEATHON also offered a comprehensive programme for children and young people.<\/strong> More than 440 schoolchildren<\/strong> were able to strengthen their knowledge and enthusiasm for technology during this week and take part in 23 Technology Workshops,<\/strong> including robot programming and Minecraft Education. Solar Boats, Cleaning Robots, Hydroponic Systems and Demonstrators from the EU-funded Research Project<\/strong> \u201c<\/a>EduDemoS<\/a>\u201c<\/a><\/strong> for renewable energies from wind, solar and water were also built. The workshops were organised by the Gerda Stetter Foundation<\/strong> <\/a>\u201c<\/strong><\/a>Technik macht Spa\u00df!\u201c<\/strong><\/a>, the Canary Islands Foundation Fundaci\u00f3n Sergio Alonso<\/a><\/strong> and German-speaking Universities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>
