Get a Bull's Eye every throw - Even if you have never tried dart before

The beginning of the project was the crazy idea to develop a mechatronical system that enables a dart player to always hit the bull’s eye of a dartboard.

When the project started even experts doubted that a technical solution could be achieved to solve this problem. The average flight-time of a fast dart is only 250ms. In that time it would be necessary to detect the dart, calculate its trajectory in real-time and finally move the dart board to the point of impact. In spite of numerous doubts and spurred by this incredible idea, eight motivated students of the faculties for computer science and mechanical engineering at the Technical University Munich (TUM) formed an interdisciplinary team. Their goal was to prove that this ambitious project could be achieved within four months and a tight budget using teamwork and passion.

Objective of the Project

The main goal of the participating university chairs itm (Information Technology in Mechanical Engineering), iwb (Machine Tools and Industrial Management), Informatik IX (Image Understanding and Knowledge-Based Systems) is to teach students about the special problems of mechatronic systems and interdisciplinary teamwork. To ensure a realistic project planning the students were additionally accompanied by the experienced consulting company ITQ .

Concept

In the course of the project several different technical solutions were discussed and rated according to their feasibility and technical reliability. The following system architecture was chosen:
